E/R: Local Drinks Production Halted by FDA Over Missing Permits

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Eastern Region has ordered producers of popular local drinks like Sobolo, Asana, Lamugin (lamugee), and fruit juices to suspend production immediately until their products receive official authorization. This crackdown has sparked concern among many producers who rely on sales at weddings, funerals, and events for their livelihood. According to the FDA, some producers must also pay administrative fees of GHS 10,000 as part of the registration process.

The directive, signed by Eastern Regional Director Anita Owusu-Kuffour, cites the Public Health Act, which prohibits manufacturing or selling unregistered food products.

One local producer in Koforidua was recently warned after their products were found at a funeral without proper approval. The FDA insists these unregistered products pose significant health risks and warned of further action if producers fail to comply.

Producers have been given a deadline of November 24, 2025, to pay fees and halt production, with authorities urging urgent compliance.
