The Cybersecurity Authority has come under intense criticism from a section of the public over the draft amendment to the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038).
The Cybersecurity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 released by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation on October 1 for public consultation, set an October 24 deadline for feedback.
However, several stakeholders have raised concerns about some of the provisions, describing them as problematic and potentially overreaching.
Member of Parliament for Ofoasi-Ayirebi and former Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, for instance has raised concerns about the bill describing it as dangerous. Mr. Nkrumah relates to President Mahama’s recent announcement of plans to trace IP addresses of individuals spreading hate speech, aiming to hold them accountable. According to him the bill if passed in its current form will be a dangerous encroachment on freedom of expression.
But what really are the details of the bill which seeks to criminalize fake identities on social media and misinformation?
