University of Ghana to get 10,000-bed hostel after Singapore agreements

The University of Ghana is set to benefit from a 10,000-bed capacity hostel after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Singapore aimed at expanding student accommodation.

The agreement was part of a series of MoUs signed during President John Dramani Mahama’s state visit to Singapore at the invitation of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

The deals included partnerships between Rock Africa, Robin Village Development, the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), and Uni Premier for prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (PPVC) and affordable housing projects.

Other agreements covered multiple sectors. Rock Africa and Ascent signed an MoU for the supply of mass flow meters and tracking solutions, while Rock Africa, Ascent, and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) agreed on the design and construction of a new oil jetty in Ghana.

Further accords included advanced security systems for airport operations between Rock Africa and Ascent Solutions, and collaboration between the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Rock Africa, and Pan United on road and pavement materials testing and construction.

A letter of intent was also signed for the redevelopment of a mixed-use project in Accra to meet international standards.

President Mahama used the visit to engage investors and push for stronger Africa–Asia economic partnerships, with Singapore as a strategic hub.

He emphasized that his vision goes beyond state diplomacy, focusing on trade, not aid.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that the president has directed the establishment of a Ghanaian consulate in Singapore to strengthen bilateral ties.

He also extended an invitation for Singapore to set up a mission in Ghana.
