NPP flagbearer slot: Bawumia promises unity, growth and digital future

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has formally declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race for the 2028 elections, pledging total commitment to the party and the nation.

Reflecting on his political journey, he recalled moments when he sacrificed his professional career and personal comfort for the NPP.

Speaking after filing his nomination on Thursday, the former Vice President emphasized his long record of service to the NPP, saying he had actively campaigned in all constituencies over the past 16 years.

“That is why I did not hesitate to leave my job at the African Development Bank in 2012, why I stood as the star witness in 2013, and why I conceded in 2024 to preserve peace. You can be sure that with Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer, I shall not hesitate to put my all on the line for the NPP and for Ghana,” he said.

He pointed to several initiatives he spearheaded during his tenure as Vice President, including the Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, Agenda 111, Zipline’s medical drone delivery, the Zongo Development Fund, and the Paperless Ports system.

The implementation of these practical initiatives, he said, resulted in many people saying he has been the most effective Vice President in Ghana’s history. “Given the opportunity, I can equally become one of the most effective presidents Ghana will have,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia drew inspiration from the values of NPP stalwarts such as J.B. Danquah, K.A. Busia, and Victor Owusu, stressing that the party’s tradition has always stood for courage, humility, foresight, and respect for all.

“The NPP and Ghana are demanding a leader who embodies deep intellect, humility, respect, unity, courage, foresight, and resilience. That is what I offer,” he said.

The Vice President cautioned against internal attacks, urging the party to remain disciplined and united ahead of the 2028 polls.

“What we say against each other is what the NDC will use against us in 2028. Stop the internal attacks now. Stop the religious and tribal attacks now. If you claim you are a true patriot and want this party to win, let your actions show,” he appealed.

He admitted that economic hardships had cost the party the 2024 elections, but assured delegates that “lessons have been learnt and will be put to good use.”

Dr. Bawumia outlined his campaign vision for a modern, digitalized, and inclusive Ghana.

Among his key proposals are:

A flat tax system for individuals, corporations, and imports.

Constituency-based development and budgeting frameworks to empower communities.

Redirecting 3% of GDP from public expenditure to local procurement for the private sector.

Enhanced support for women, the physically challenged, and vulnerable groups.

According to him, his vision is to expand the Ghanaian economy through rich ideas and provide incentives for accelerated job creation, restoring hope and reducing the cost of living for the average Ghanaian.
