Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially stepped into the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race, filing his nomination on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in a move that cements his place as one of the frontrunners ahead of the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.
The filing event at the NPP headquarters in Accra quickly transformed into a political spectacle, with streets flooded by party faithful in white and blue, waving flags and chanting to brass band tunes.
Dr. Bawumia, accompanied by his wife Samira Bawumia, senior party executives, and a spirited crowd of supporters, used the occasion to declare his vision for the party and Ghana’s future.
He pledged to run an issues-driven campaign anchored on digital innovation, industrial growth, job creation, and inclusiveness.
“The NPP and Ghana are demanding for a leader who embodies the values of this tradition. Deep intellect, humility, respect for all persons, unity, courage, foresight and resilience.
Dear Citizens, as the NPP is looking for a leader who embodies the character of this party’s tradition and the values of our forebearers, I Mahamudu Bawumia offer myself to lead the party for the 2028 elections because I have the integrity, competence, compassion, humility and the values not only required to lead this party but to lead this country,” he stated.
His filing comes just two days after former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong became the first to submit his nomination, and ahead of other contenders such as former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong.
The race, which officially closed nominations today, is expected to be fiercely contested, with the party set to release the full list of aspirants on October 8 before balloting begins.
The primaries will be held on January 31, 2026, in what many observers describe as one of the most consequential internal contests in the NPP’s history.
