The Greater Accra Regional Hospital is contesting the findings of a committee investigation into an altercation at the facility that left an emergency nurse injured.
According to the committee’s report, key diagnostic equipment in the emergency unit was non-functional at the time of the incident, which hampered the delivery of care. The report also indicated that the nurse at the center of the incident involving Ralph Saint Williams did not suffer any fractures or dislocations, contrary to earlier claims.
However, Sarah Danquah, Public Relations Officer for Nurses at the hospital, has rejected the committee’s conclusions. Speaking on GHToday on GHOne TV, Danquah alleged that management has video footage showing Ralph Williams slapping a pregnant senior nurse during the incident — footage she claims was not considered because the committee failed to invite them to participate in the investigation.
“One gentleman was trying to use the monitor on someone. He went straight to the one in black — a pregnant woman — and slapped her face,” she said.
When asked whether the video had been submitted to the committee, Danquah responded, “I was not called into the committee, and the media has not reached out to me. Nobody has asked me for a video.”
Meanwhile, Director of Communications for the Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has alleged a cover-up. He claims the government had already shown bias against the nurses due to their past criticisms of the Health Minister.
“A government whose functionaries have all gone after the nurses tells me that they’ve set up a committee and that their committee has gone to do an investigation in a matter that they are already prejudiced?” Aboagye said.
“Even before the committee began work, they were already saying nothing happened to the nurse and were calling the nurses names. And you think I should believe a political committee? Are we kids in this country?”
Responding to the concerns, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman, urged those with contrary evidence to submit it for consideration.
“We asked them to bring evidence, and that is what we used,” he said in an interview on GHOne TV.
“She has just come out to say she has a video. She should bring the video. This is just a report we’ve submitted. If you think that you have any other contrary evidence, just submit it and we’ll look at it.”
