National Cathedral Board denies claims project will be converted into Cultural Convention Centre

The Board of the National Cathedral has dismissed rumours that the project will be transformed into a Cultural Convention Centre, labelling such claims as premature and detrimental to ongoing efforts to resume construction.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting on July 7, 2025, Executive Director Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah emphasised that the project remains on track, with architectural designs completed, 8% of construction finished, and land preparation fully in place. “The suggestion that the National Cathedral is being repurposed is entirely baseless,” he stated.

The Board reaffirmed its commitment to completing the Cathedral, describing it as “essential national infrastructure” for hosting significant religious events. Dr. Opoku-Mensah cited President Mahama’s recent establishment of July 1 as a National Day of Prayer as proof of the project’s ongoing relevance.

Acknowledging public scepticism and political debates surrounding the project, the Board is actively working to restore confidence and secure funding through a cooperative model involving the state, the church, and civil society. “We are forging a clear path to completion by depoliticising the project, ensuring transparency, and strengthening partnerships,” Dr. Opoku-Mensah noted.

In addition to its primary role as a sacred space, the Cathedral is planned to serve as a cultural and tourism landmark, featuring attractions such as a Bible Museum, a Biblical Garden, and revenue-generating facilities like a restaurant and conference halls.

Addressing concerns about mismanagement, the Board clarified that the land has been legally transferred to the National Cathedral of Ghana, a registered entity. An independent audit by Deloitte and Touche confirmed that all state funds have been used appropriately, with payments linked to verified contracts and completed work.

The Board assures it remains steadfast in its vision of the National Cathedral as a unifying symbol for Christians in Ghana and worldwide, poised to become both a sacred sanctuary and a cherished national heritage site.
