Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central Patrick Yaw Boamah has charged the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to focus on strengthening the party rather than just racing to choose a flagbearer.
The Party through its National Council has announced January 31, 2026 for the Presidential Primaries. The unprecedented move has received mixed reactions from political analysts and rank and file of the party.
Even though the party is yet to blow the whistle for campaigning for the flagbearership contest to start, some individuals have been busy mobilizing and watering the grounds. The latest to declare his intention to contest is former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum after former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong did so earlier.
Abetifi MP Bryan Acheamong who is also in the race has set up an exploratory committee for his flagbearership bid.
Some party members have argued the early Presidential Primaries is to favour 2024 flagbearer and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. They argue the move could be counterproductive since the party has not taken time to heal after the monumental defeat at the polls in 2024.
Yesterday, June 19, 2025 a group of MPs belonging to the New Patriotic Party numbering over 60 visited Dr. Bawumia to pledge their support according to members of the team of the former Vice President. That number has however been challenged by supporters of other aspirants.
But in a cryptic message on social media, Patrick Boamah who has been widely reported to be in the flagbearership race asked the party to look beyond the ‘noise’ and build a stronger party capable of winning the 2028 elections.
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) needs a strong party, well organized and disciplined to produce a President not just a Flagbearer.” Mr. Boamah posted
