The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will soon hit the streets in protest against the passage of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Government through the bill is seeking to impose GH¢1 levy on a litre of fuel to address the energy sector debt to avoid a total collapse of the sector.
The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who laid the bill under a certificate of urgency, stated that the energy sector’s total indebtedness stands at US$3.1 billion as of March 2025.
He added $3.7 billion is required to fix the current challenges confronting the sector.
The minority members of Parliament however staged a walkout during the passage of the bill.
Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Kwamena fenyo-Markin described the levy as another E-levy which the NDC abolished in the 2025 budget.
In a Facebook post, the National Organiser for NPP Henry Nana Boakye registered his abhorrence for the levy. According to him the NPP, in collaboration with other political groups, will embark on a demonstration in Kumasi against the levy. Nana B labelled the levy as “wicked” and “obnoxious”.
