Lincoln University degree withdrawal a ‘mark of honour’ — Assemblies of God backs Mahama

The Assemblies of God, Ghana has thrown its support behind President John Dramani Mahama following the decision by Lincoln University in the United States to withdraw an honorary doctorate earlier set to be conferred on him.

The university reportedly took the decision in response to Mahama’s position on Ghana’s proposed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which has generated both local and international debate.

However, the church described the move not as a setback, but as a “mark of honour,” commending the president for what it called his firm commitment to biblical principles.

In a statement, the Assemblies of God referenced Acts 5:41, noting that the apostles rejoiced after facing persecution for their faith—drawing a parallel to Mahama’s situation.

According to the church, the criticism directed at the president should be seen as affirmation of his resolve to uphold Christian values, particularly on issues of sexuality and morality.

Mahama, who is a longstanding member of the Assemblies of God, has consistently maintained that homosexuality is contrary to biblical teachings, as well as Ghanaian cultural norms.

The church praised his stance, describing it as a demonstration of leadership grounded in faith and moral conviction.

It further urged Christians across the country to remain steadfast in their beliefs and to support leaders who reflect those values, while also calling for prayers for the nation.

The Assemblies of God emphasised the need for unity among believers and encouraged the broader Christian community to stand firm in what it described as the defence of moral and spiritual principles.
