Former NPP Chairman Freddie Blay remanded in custody over Kitase demolition dispute; to reappear in court on April 9

Accra, Ghana – Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has been remanded by the Akropong Circuit Court in connection with an alleged demolition dispute at Kitase. He is scheduled to reappear in court on April 9, 2026.

Blay was handed over to the Akropong Police by officers in Accra after a warrant for his arrest was executed on Monday, March 16, 2026.

The case involves allegations that Blay ordered the demolition of a house under construction on a parcel of land in Kitase. The landowner filed a complaint with the police, prompting an invitation for Blay to assist with investigations, which he reportedly did not honor.

Charges were filed, but Blay failed to appear in court on the originally scheduled arraignment date in April 2025. Following his absence, the court issued an arrest warrant, which was executed this week.

Sources close to Blay say he was unaware of the warrant before his arrest and maintain that the dispute concerns land he purchased in 1994, which later became subject to litigation. They insist that Blay did not order the demolition of any building but directed the clearing of a bare piece of land in January 2026 to prevent the breeding of dangerous animals, including reptiles.

The sources further note that the complainant had previously obtained a favorable ruling at the High Court in Koforidua, which has since been appealed. Attempts to serve the complainant with appeal-related processes were reportedly unsuccessful, and Blay was unaware of other court proceedings until the arrest.
