The CEO of MTN Group, Ralph Mupita, has reaffirmed Ghana’s importance in the telecom giant’s global strategy, announcing plans to invest $1.1 billion in the country over the next three years. The investment will focus on expanding digital infrastructure, enhancing service quality, and expanding broadband coverage.
Mupita made the announcement during a media engagement in Accra last Friday, revealing that MTN Ghana would continue to grow its network. “We already have 5,000 sites in Ghana, and we’re adding another 500 this year,” he said.
MTN Ghana’s strong performance has elevated it to the status of the group’s third-largest subsidiary, alongside South Africa and Nigeria. “This year, Ghana joins South Africa and Nigeria as a major subsidiary for MTN Group,” Mupita explained, highlighting Ghana’s long-term growth potential.
He also noted that MTN Ghana was recognized as the best-performing operation in the group’s internal Million Dollar Challenge for 2025, an accolade for excellence in strategic execution, innovation, and value creation.
The CEO emphasized that the digital economy and fintech are key growth areas for MTN Ghana. He outlined plans to expand mobile money services and engage with regulators to support national financial inclusion goals.
Beyond telecommunications, MTN is also exploring partnerships with the Ghanaian government in areas such as fibre optic expansion, data centres, artificial intelligence, and digital skilling. Mupita also referenced a recent $2 million commitment to youth coding initiatives and expressed interest in supporting content creation among Ghana’s youth.
“Ghana has immense talent, and we want to create a platform for young people to build creative content and businesses,” Mupita said.
Drawing inspiration from India’s digital growth, he stated that Ghana has the potential to leapfrog its development through robust digital infrastructure and inclusive payment systems. “Nothing stops Ghana from advancing its ambitions by a decade with the right digital infrastructure,” he added.
