My Relationship with Ken Agyapong Remains Unsoiled But Our Party Comes First — Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says his personal relationship with Kennedy Agyapong remains strong, despite the rivalry during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent presidential primaries. He said their friendship is built on trust, respect, and loyalty. According to him, politics should not destroy long-standing personal bonds.

In the just-ended NPP presidential primaries, Mr Agyapong won the vote in the Effutu Constituency with 644 votes. Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia secured 79 votes, while Dr Bryan Acheampong polled 32 votes.

Speaking to party stakeholders in Effutu on Sunday, February 1, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin said loyalty is an important value in his life.

“For me, this is a true friend I trust. Loyalty to friendship is important. A man must never forget his friend,” he said.

He explained that although Mr Agyapong contested the party’s flagbearership, it did not affect their relationship. He said both of them understand that the interest of the NPP must come first.

“My relationship with him remains solid and unbroken. He knows, just as I do, that the party must always come first,” he added.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also revealed that Mr Agyapong has reached out to Dr Bawumia after the primaries to offer his support.

“I am happy to inform you that yesterday, without any prompting, he called Dr Bawumia. It was a short but meaningful conversation to assure him of his support for the 2028 election,” he said.

He described the gesture as a sign of unity and said it shows Mr Agyapong’s commitment to party cohesion.

Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence that unity among party leaders will strengthen the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections. He added that if members work together in good faith, the party will be in a strong position to reclaim power.
