Ghana has received the promised $250,000 donation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support victims of the June floods, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced.
The donation, equivalent to approximately GH¢3 million, arrived in Ghana this week and has been transferred directly to the accounts of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), which will administer the relief package to affected victims.
Mr. Ablakwa disclosed this on Friday, October 16, following the inauguration of Ghana’s National Consultative Committee on Regional Integration (NCCRI), which is mandated to oversee ECOWAS regional integration initiatives and social interventions in the country.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) agreed to engage ADRA as an independent implementing partner to ensure the transparent administration of the funds.
He said the government would not be involved in selecting beneficiaries of the relief package, stressing the importance of independence in the distribution process.
“The full ECOWAS donation of $250,000.00 (about 3 million Ghana Cedis) was directly transferred to the accounts of the highly reputable Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) to administer to the flood victims,” the minister wrote in a social media post.
