Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has dismissed claims that the Presidency directed the company to withhold data on river turbidity and water pollution from the public.
The clarification follows a viral video alleging that GWL staff had been instructed not to release raw water pollution and turbidity data to journalists and the media.
Management of GWL says no such directive or gag order exists, urging the public to disregard the claims.
The company says it continues to provide updates on turbidity levels through its established channels, particularly as illegal mining continues to affect raw water sources and treatment operations.
GWL says the impact of galamsey remains significant, with some treatment plants recording extremely high turbidity levels.
At the Daboase Water Treatment Plant, for instance, turbidity levels on the River Pra have reportedly reached as high as 11,955 NTU, far beyond the plant’s normal operational capacity.
GWL says it remains committed to transparency in reporting the impact of illegal mining on the country’s water resources and treatment facilities.
