Flooding: Mahama directs release of GHS 300 million for relief and mitigation measures

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the release of GHS300 million from the Contingency Fund following the devastating floods recorded in parts of the country on Monday June 29, 2026. 12 people have lost their lives to flooding in the Greater Accra Region which saw parts of the capital city and Tema submerged under waters after hours of torrential rains. The development left many cars flooded and properties destroyed with several people needing rescuing.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, close to 200 people were rescued in collaboration with NADMO and Ghana Armed Forces. A member of the media relations unit of the Ghana National Fire Service Alex King Nartey who confirmed the death toll disclosed the deaths were recorded in Abofu, Alajo, Odawna and Tema Newtown.

The numbers are however expected to rise as the waters recede and the drains clear.

President Mahama has however vowed a tough stance in addressing the perennial flooding in the country.
