Mexico march into knockouts: El Tri clinch Group A as South Korea victory seals early qualification

Mexico became the first team to book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea, securing top spot in Group A with a match to spare.

The decisive moment arrived early in the second half when Luis Romo capitalized on a costly mistake by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu and calmly slotted home what proved to be the winning goal. Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel then produced crucial saves late on to preserve Mexico’s perfect defensive record and secure all three points.

Meanwhile, South Africa and Czechia played out a dramatic 1-1 draw earlier in the day. Czechia took the lead through Michal Sadílek before Bafana Bafana rescued a point thanks to a late Teboho Mokoena penalty.

Mexico now sit on six points from two matches, while South Korea have three. Czechia and South Africa are both on one point heading into the final round of fixtures.

What makes Mexico’s achievement even more impressive is that they have already mathematically secured first place. Even if Czechia defeat them in the final group game and South Korea beat South Africa, Mexico would remain above the Koreans due to their head-to-head victory over them, which is the first tiebreaker. As a result, their final match against Czechia is effectively a formality in terms of the battle for top spot.

Mexico’s final Group A fixture comes against Czechia on June 24, while South Africa face South Korea at the same time in a crucial battle for qualification.

Looking ahead, the Group A winners are scheduled to face one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams from Groups C, E, F, H or I in the Round of 32. Based on the current projections, potential opponents could include teams such as Scotland, Tunisia, Norway, Algeria or another third-placed finisher depending on the final group standings.

For now, however, the hosts can celebrate. Two matches, two victories, three goals scored, none conceded, and a place in the knockout rounds secured. Mexico have turned home support into early World Cup momentum and now head into the business end of the tournament carrying the confidence of a nation dreaming of a deep run on home soil.
