Government has paid ¢12 billion towards inherited road project commitments as part of efforts to sustain critical infrastructure works across the country.
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, disclosed that the payments form part of approximately ¢40 billion in inherited contractual obligations being managed by the Mahama administration.
According to the Minister, government remains committed to completing all inherited road projects, including the Accra–Kumasi Highway dualisation project, which he described as a major national priority.
Mr. Agbodza made the remarks during a meeting with contractors and consultants working on bypass projects at Osino, Anyinam and Konongo.
He announced a 2027 deadline for the completion of the ongoing bypass works and directed the Ghana Highway Authority to renegotiate expired contracts and formalise revised agreements with contractors.
The Roads Minister noted that prolonged delays have significantly increased the cost of the Accra–Kumasi dualisation project from an initial ¢1.9 billion to more than ¢4 billion.
Despite concerns over deteriorating road conditions and delays on portions of the highway, he assured that government will not abandon the project.
Contractors and consultants, however, appealed for the timely release of additional funds to accelerate work and help meet the revised completion timeline.
