President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over landlords violating Ghana’s six-month rent advance law, warning that excessive demands continue due to weak enforcement.
Speaking at the Green City Project sod-cutting ceremony in Dedesua, Ashanti Region, Mahama highlighted that many tenants avoid reporting violations out of fear of losing accommodation, making it difficult for authorities to uphold the law.
“We have a rent court meant to prosecute landlords asking for more than six months, but both landlords and tenants are often reluctant to report,” he said, emphasizing the need for fairness, protection, and dignity for tenants.
The President also reaffirmed government support through the National Home Ownership Fund, which provides long-term financial assistance, particularly to retirees, to secure decent housing. He noted that initiatives like the Green City Project are central to addressing Ghana’s housing deficit and improving access to affordable homes.
