The Rent Control Commission has extended its nationwide inspection of student hostels to areas around Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) following concerns over high accommodation charges imposed on students.
Leading the exercise in Kumasi, Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku described some of the fees being charged by hostel operators as “outrageous and ridiculous,” warning that operators found violating rental regulations could face legal action.
During inspections at facilities including Victory Tower Hostel and Liendavel Hot Hostel, students disclosed accommodation charges ranging from GH¢9,000 to GH¢20,000 depending on room occupancy.
The Commission also found that several hostels lacked operational permits or certificates required to run student accommodation facilities.
At St. Theresa’s Hostel, officials raised concerns after discovering a notice indicating the facility had allegedly been closed by the Ghana Tourism Authority in 2016 despite still operating. Management, however, insisted the issues had been resolved.
Mr. Opoku said the Commission remains committed to ensuring fairness in hostel pricing and protecting students from exploitation.
