FIFA has opened multiple disciplinary cases against Argentina following the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, including charges over a post-match altercation with Spain and the display of a political banner referencing the Falkland Islands.
The charges stem from Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final on July 19 and their earlier semifinal victory over England.
According to FIFA, midfielder Leandro Paredes faces three assault-related charges for his alleged involvement in clashes with Spanish players after the final, while defender Nahuel Molina faces two assault charges. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala has also been charged over an alleged assault following the match.
Molina and Thiago Almada have additionally been charged with unsporting behaviour, while Spain midfielder Gavi also faces an unsporting conduct charge.
FIFA has also charged the Argentine Football Association after players displayed a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Malvinas are Argentine”) following their 2-1 semifinal victory over England.
The governing body said the banner amounted to “using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature.”
In addition, FIFA is investigating allegations of discriminatory chants and gestures by Argentina supporters, the throwing of objects by spectators during several matches, and the alleged conduct of members of the team’s technical staff.
FIFA said all those charged have been given the opportunity to respond before the FIFA Disciplinary Committee reaches a decision.
The Falkland Islands, known as Islas Malvinas in Argentina, remain the subject of a long-running sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
