FIFA has launched an investigation into violent scenes involving Argentina players following their 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The world football governing body announced that its Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate possible breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code arising from post-match incidents.
The clashes erupted moments after the final whistle, with Argentina defender Nahuel Molina allegedly striking Spain captain Rodri, while midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in a confrontation with Spain players Eric García and Gavi.
Paredes was shown a red card after the final whistle by referee Slavko Vinčić. Earlier in the match, Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández had also been sent off, while three other Argentina players and head coach Lionel Scaloni received yellow cards.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code with regard to the post-match incidents,” FIFA said in a statement.
FIFA is also investigating Argentina over a political banner displayed by players after their semi-final victory against England. The banner, reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falkland Islands are Argentine”), is alleged to have been smuggled into the stadium by supporters.
Under FIFA regulations, players and teams are prohibited from making political statements during official competitions, and those found responsible could face disciplinary sanctions.
The investigation will determine whether further action, including suspensions or fines, will be imposed on the players involved.
