Police arrest midwife over alleged child trafficking syndicate

Police have arrested a midwife in connection with an alleged child trafficking syndicate following ongoing investigations that have already led to the rescue of two children.

The suspect, identified as Lucinda Naomi Otchere, is a midwife and head of the maternity and labour ward at Trust Mother and Child Hospital in Osu.

According to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, preliminary investigations suggest the suspect allegedly received a missing seven-year-old girl from another suspect, Janet Larbie, and paid GH¢20,000 in the process.

Police further allege that the suspect later paid an additional GH¢35,000 and instructed that another missing five-year-old girl be delivered to a couple at Pokuase.

Investigators believe the group has been operating a child trafficking network for some time.

The arrest follows earlier operations by the Central East Regional Police Command, which led to the arrest of six other suspects linked to the case.

The investigation began after DOVVSU in Kasoa received a report on April 10, 2026, concerning the disappearance of seven-year-old Kadija Karim.

Police say the child was allegedly lured under the pretext of being taken to see her biological mother before being moved to another location.

Further investigations uncovered another case involving a 10-month-old baby and a five-year-old girl allegedly taken from their mother under the guise of care.

The infant was later traced to the Ashanti Region, where police say the child had been sold for GH¢35,000 before being rescued and reunited with the family.

Kadija Karim has also been rescued, but the five-year-old girl allegedly sent to Pokuase remains missing.

Police are appealing to the public and the couple believed to be in possession of the child to assist with investigations and help locate the missing girl.

Five suspects are currently on remand while investigations continue.
