Ministry of Education wishes 2026 WASSCE candidates success, warns against exam malpractice

The Ministry of Education has extended best wishes to all final-year students sitting for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), while issuing a strong warning against examination malpractice.

In a statement dated May 13, 2026, and signed by Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas, the Ministry announced that a total of 509,862 candidates — comprising 225,274 boys and 284,588 girls from 1,020 schools — will sit for the examinations at 1,017 centres nationwide. The figure represents an increase of 48,126 candidates, equivalent to a 10.4 percent rise compared to last year’s total of 461,736 candidates.

The Ministry urged candidates to remain calm, focused, and disciplined throughout the examination period, encouraging them to trust in their preparation and abilities.

Authorities also cautioned students against engaging in any form of examination malpractice, stressing that cheating could lead to cancellation of papers, disqualification, or legal sanctions. The government reaffirmed its support for the West African Examinations Council and other stakeholders in protecting the integrity of the examinations.

The statement further warned invigilators, supervisors, teachers, school officials, and external collaborators against aiding examination fraud. According to the Ministry, 43 teachers have already been arrested over malpractice during the recently concluded BECE examinations and will face legal action.

The Ministry added that proposals to publicly name adults involved in examination malpractice are under consideration.
