British High Commission hosts 2026 Commonwealth Games Business Forum to unlock opportunities

The British High Commission in Ghana has organised a Business Forum aimed at helping Ghanaian companies identify and take advantage of opportunities tied to the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The event brought together key stakeholders from across the sports and business ecosystem, including the Minister of Sports and Recreation, the Deputy British High Commissioner, heads of sporting agencies and federations, as well as representatives from the finance, marketing, tourism, and sports industries.

Speaking during a panel session, Dr. John Apea encouraged the business community to shift focus from traditional sponsorship models to forming strategic partnerships that can deliver long-term value.

The Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, highlighted the critical role of branding in positioning Ghana on the global stage. He stressed that a strong national image can attract investment and boost the country’s sports economy.

Meanwhile, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie, disclosed plans to establish a “Ghana Village” in Glasgow during the Games. The initiative is expected to promote Ghanaian culture, tourism, and business to an international audience.

On the sidelines of the forum, Mark Smithson, Regional Director for Anglophone West Africa at the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, urged Ghanaian businesses to actively explore the wide range of economic prospects linked to the global event.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games is scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026, in Glasgow, bringing together athletes and stakeholders from across the Commonwealth.
