Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has interdicted two doctors and two nurses following the death of a road accident victim who was allegedly refused emergency treatment while being transferred by ambulance.
The hospital issued a statement on Monday, February 23, 2026, confirming that the four staff members have been temporarily relieved of their duties pending investigations, after public outrage over reports that the patient was turned away despite being in critical condition.
A committee has been established to conduct a full inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether emergency care protocols were breached. All personnel involved have been directed to fully cooperate with the investigation to ensure transparency and fairness.
The deceased, 29-year-old Charles Amissah, an engineer with Promasidor Ghana Limited, sustained severe shoulder injuries in a hit-and-run accident at the Circle Overpass in Accra on February 6, 2026. Emergency medical services stabilised him and prepared him for hospital transfer.
Reports indicate that Amissah was unable to secure admission at the Police Hospital, Ridge Hospital, and eventually Korle Bu Teaching Hospital due to a lack of available beds. While at Korle Bu, he reportedly went into cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead.
