The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has prohibited all current government appointees from running for executive positions within the party unless they resign from their appointments.
This directive was announced by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, during a press conference on Thursday, January 29.
Mr. Kwetey stated that this decision is part of the party’s reorganization efforts, which are set to begin on January 30. He clarified that any government appointee wishing to contest for a party position must resign at least six months before submitting their nomination forms.
“Any individual contesting for any party position while holding an office appointed by the president or the government must resign at least six clear months before filing their nomination forms for the desired party position,” he explained.
The restriction applies to a variety of government appointees, including ministers, chief executives, and heads of local government.
Mr. Kwetey outlined the individuals affected by this rule as follows:
(a) Ministers and Deputy Ministers;
(b) Chief Executive Officers or Managing Directors, as well as Deputy Chief Executive Officers or Deputy Managing Directors;
(c) Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives of the Government of Ghana’s Administrative Units.
However, Mr. Kwetey noted that board members are exempt from this directive. He stated, “A person appointed as a chairperson or member of any Board, or any similar position, shall be exempt from the restrictions outlined above.”
The NDC indicated that this move aims to streamline the party’s internal processes as it embarks on its nationwide reorganization exercise.
