The New Juaben Municipal Crime Officer, Augustine Asante, has sounded the alarm over a surge in poisoning cases within the municipality, warning that criminals are increasingly using toxic substances to covertly eliminate their victims.
According to Mr. Asante, poisoning has become a preferred method for some perpetrators, as it allows them to conceal their crimes, especially when victims consume contaminated food, water, or beverages.
“One issue I want to bring to the notice of the public is poisoning. Due to the nature of our work, we have witnessed many deaths. The rate of poisoning has become too much,” he said.
He explained that criminals now use highly potent chemicals, sometimes only needing to dip a finger into the substance to contaminate plates, spoons, water, or drinks, making detection difficult.
The Crime Officer urged the public to exercise extra caution and vigilance, especially at social gatherings such as parties, dinners, and public events.
“People must be very conscious of what they eat and drink, and from whom,” he cautioned.
Mr. Asante made these remarks while addressing members of the Pentecost International Worship Center (PIWC) in Koforidua during a community sensitization event.
Poisoning remains a significant global public health concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), unintentional poisoning caused 106,683 deaths worldwide in 2016, resulting in the loss of 6.3 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).
In many countries, poisoning is among the leading causes of emergency hospital admissions. Health experts emphasize that poisoning is a time-sensitive medical emergency that often requires specialist intervention for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
