In a pulsating encounter, Egypt edged past Zimbabwe 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations opener. The Pharaohs, led by Mohamed Salah, dominated possession and created numerous chances, but Zimbabwe’s Prince Dube spoiled the party, scoring in the 20th minute to give the Warriors an unexpected lead.
Egypt pushed hard for an equalizer, and it finally arrived in the 64th minute through Omar Marmoush’s stunning solo effort. The forward cut inside from the left wing and fired into the roof of the net, leveling the scores.
As the match seemed headed for a draw, Salah produced a dramatic stoppage-time winner, securing Egypt’s first win of the tournament. The Liverpool star controlled the ball into the box and beat Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi to seal a thrilling 2-1 victory for the Pharaohs.
Salah, who started his first game after four successive matches on the bench at Liverpool, was instrumental in Egypt’s win. Egypt’s next match is against South Africa on Boxing Day.
