Public outcry forces FIFA to reduce World Cup ticket prices

FIFA has finally yielded to pressure from fans and reduced World Cup ticket prices after facing widespread criticism. As part of the new plan, around 1,000 tickets per match will be available for as low as $60, specifically for supporters of the teams playing. This new “Supporter Entry Tier” is designed to make the tournament more accessible to loyal fans and will apply to all 104 matches, including the final.

The move comes after fan groups, particularly in Europe, slammed FIFA’s initial pricing plans as “outrageous” and “prohibitively expensive”. The original prices ranged from $120 to $265 for group-stage games, with the cheapest final ticket costing a whopping $4,185.

FIFA’s decision is seen as a response to the backlash, but fan groups like Football Supporters Europe (FSE) argue that the changes don’t go far enough. They claim that only a limited number of fans per match will benefit from the reduced prices, while the majority will still face steep costs.

The World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 teams and is expected to rake in at least $10 billion in revenue for FIFA. Despite the controversy, the organization has received an overwhelming response, with over 20 million ticket requests from fans in over 200 countries and territories.
