Ghana Shines Bright at Inaugural West African Para Games in Nigeria

Abeokuta, Nigeria — Ghana’s para athletes have made a spectacular start at the inaugural West African Para Games, securing a total of eight medals within the first three days of competition held in Abeokuta, Nigeria. The Ghanaian contingent showcased outstanding performances across multiple disciplines, demonstrating skill, determination, and resilience. The medal haul includes:

  • Para Powerlifting: Tahiru Haruna (72kg–107kg), Isaac Obeng (59kg), and Daniel Kankam (65kg) each earned silver and bronze medals, showcasing Ghana’s strength in lifting events.
  • Para Shooting: Isaac Adopleh clinched silver and bronze medals in both pistol and rifle events, reflecting precision and composure under pressure.
  • Para Badminton: Bronze medals were secured by Akosua Nkansah in the Wheelchair 2 Women’s Singles category, Hayford Kwame Adasi in the Wheelchair 1 Men’s Singles, and Atta Owusu in the Standing Upper 5 category.

At the medal ceremonies, the athletes expressed immense joy and gratitude, while coaches lauded their discipline, dedication, and hard work leading up to and during the games. This impressive start marks a proud moment for Ghana in the regional para sports arena.

Mary Apedo, Chef de Maison for Ghana, expressed confidence in the team’s continued success. She anticipates more medals as Ghana’s para athletes prepare to compete in wheelchair volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair athletics on the fourth day of competition.
