WAEC Cancels Entire WASSCE Results of 653 Candidates Over Usage of Mobile Phones

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cancelled the results of thousands of candidates following investigations into examination malpractice during the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates in Ghana.

The Ghana Examinations Committee, during its 40th meeting on November 17, 2025, approved the cancellation and withholding of results for thousands of candidates involved in various forms of examination irregularities.

According to the committee’s statement, the subject results of 6,295 candidates were canceled for bringing foreign materials such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials into examination halls. Additionally, entire results of 653 candidates were canceled for possessing mobile phones during examinations—a serious violation of exam regulations.

The committee also withheld subject results for 908 candidates and entire results for 158 candidates due to suspected offenses, with investigations still ongoing into cases of collusion involving candidates from 185 schools. These withheld results are expected to be released by the end of December 2025, depending on the outcome of the investigations.

Beyond candidate sanctions, WAEC revealed that 35 individuals, including 19 teachers, were found to have compromised the integrity of the examination process. Of these, 19 have been prosecuted and convicted, receiving fines or imprisonment. The remaining 16 are awaiting court proceedings. WAEC further indicated that the implicated teachers would face disciplinary actions from the Ghana Education Service.

The 2025 examination cycle saw a total of 461,736 candidates registered across 1,021 schools, with a slight increase over the previous year’s figures.
