Ghana have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Canada, Mexico and USA. The Black Stars defeated Comoros in their final qualifier by a goal to nil at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday October 12, 2026. The team put up a not so flamboyant performance which many believe was precautionary. Though football lovers who throng the stadium were left with a tamed excitement, the left for their homes with smiles as the Stars did enough to secure qualification through a Mohammed Kudus tap in in the second-half.
Otto Addo’s side struggled to break the defence of Comorians defence in the first-half. The breakthrough came just two minutes after the restart when Thomas Partey found space down the right and sent in a precise low cross that Kudus coolly tucked home.
Comoros, who famously defeated Ghana at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, mounted late pressure but were kept out by the solid pairing of Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Salisu. There were some near misses for the Comorians leaving many Ghanaians in and outside the stadium on tenterhooks.
Otto Addo made some mass substitutions which saw Joseph Paintsil and Caleb Yirenkyi join the action.
The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among players, technical staff, and fans, marking Ghana’s triumphant return to the World Cup stage for the 5th time with 25 out of a possible 30 points in Group I.
With Mali defeating Madagascar, a draw or even a loss to Comoros would have been inconsequential to the qualification of the Black Stars in the group.
