Savannah: Mass displacement and starvation of women, children over escalating Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Conflict

The escalating conflict over a piece of land in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District in the Savannah region has left hundreds of residents, particularly women and children displaced and starving.

The once busy communities have now become ghost towns as residents flee to safety at police stations.

Villages such as Seiyiri and Nasoyiri near Sawla, and Bodi, Kakiase, Gbogdaa, and Doli on the way to Bole, have all been deserted.

An eyewitness tells a story of an elderly woman with a walking stick was spotted alone, seemingly left behind in the rush to escape at Gbogdaa.

Hundreds of the fleeing residents have pitched camp at the Sawla Police Station, ostensibly for protection from the heavy police presence. A video in possession of Accra News Online shows residents including women and children sleeping rough at the mercy of the weather.

District Chief Executive for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Sinkina Saaka has disclosed his outfit is unable to provide food for the starving children and women over fears the other faction will misconstrue that to meet support.

The clashes which started as a result of a land dispute has escalated into a full blown tribal conflict with 11 persons dead so far, many left with varied degrees of injuries and houses torched.

Security forces have stepped up operations, with all vehicles passing through the district subjected to thorough searches.

The palace of the Gbiniyiri chief has also been set ablaze by the irate residents
