Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed claims questioning the Ghanaian identity of his wife, Samira Bawumia, describing them as baseless propaganda.
Speaking at the NPP New York 33rd Anniversary celebration on Sunday, August 24, Dr. Bawumia challenged those behind the allegations, stressing that his wife had long played an active role in the party’s political journey.
“When Samira was campaigning the length and breadth of Ghana for the party, they did not say she was not a true Ghanaian. So, what has changed now? Why now?” he asked.
He condemned the remarks, said to have come from a senior party member aligned with one of his internal rivals, calling them “unbelievable” and “dangerous.”
Highlighting Samira Bawumia’s contributions, Dr. Bawumia noted that she had been instrumental in mobilising support for the party both in opposition and in government.
He argued that questioning her nationality was not only unjust but also damaging to the NPP’s broader appeal.
“It made me realise how desperate and dangerous some of our internal opponents have become. NPP is not a tribally or religiously bigoted party, so look for other issues to market yourselves,” he declared.
He urged party members to reject divisive propaganda and instead strengthen the NPP’s message of unity and inclusivity.
“We are the party of inclusivity and hope. Our strength has always come from embracing Ghanaians of every background. That is what will make us win in 2028,” he concluded.
