TICAD 9: Mahama announces $100m agri-tech deal with Degas Limited

Ghana’s agricultural sector is set for a major shake-up as Japanese agritech company Degas Limited announces a $100 million investment package to be rolled out over the next four years.

The deal was sealed in Yokohama, Japan, where President John Dramani Mahama held talks with Degas founder and Chief Executive, Doga Makiura.

According to President Mahama, the investment is designed to position Ghana as a continental hub for AI-powered agriculture, harnessing technology such as satellite monitoring and precision farming to raise productivity, improve value chains, and generate new jobs, especially for young people.

Degas is not new to Ghana’s farming space. The company has already supported more than 86,000 smallholder farmers across 122,000 acres, using a unique financing model that has doubled incomes while maintaining a 95 percent repayment rate.

President Mahama described the move as a “vote of confidence” in Ghana’s agricultural vision, stressing that the initiative would not only improve food security but also accelerate economic resilience.

“Ghana has secured a major boost for our agricultural transformation. I met with Doga Makiura, CEO and founder of Degas Limited, here in Yokohama, who announced a $100 million investment over the next four years to help establish Ghana as an AI-powered agricultural hub.

Degas has already financed more than 86,000 smallholder farmers across 122,000 acres, doubling incomes with a 95% repayment rate. With AI-driven satellite monitoring and precision agriculture, we will strengthen value chains from inputs to markets, improve food security, and create more jobs for our youth.”

Industry analysts say the deal could mark a turning point for West Africa’s food systems, setting Ghana on course to become a leader in AI-driven agribusiness.
