Apologise to Akandoh within 24hrs – GNAFF slams GRNMA Secretary over ‘derogatory’ comment

The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) has issued a sharp response to remarks made by Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), against Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Ghana’s farming community.

Dr. Tenkorang-Twum, reacting to the assault of a nurse at Ridge Hospital, claimed the Health Minister’s background as a farmer made him unfit to understand hospital operations.

His comments sparked outrage from the public and professional groups, with many labeling them as distasteful, disrespectful, and insulting.

In a statement released on Friday, August 22, GNAFF described the remarks as “unprovoked and derogatory,” stressing that they disrespected not just the Minister but also farmers and fishermen who remain critical to Ghana’s food security and economic growth.

“Farmers and fishermen have long been the backbone of Ghana’s economy, contributing immensely to the nation’s growth, food security, and economic survival. It is therefore highly disheartening, discourteous, and unacceptable for such a venerable group to be subjected to public ridicule in this manner,” the association stated.

GNAFF has given Dr. Tenkorang-Twum a 24-hour ultimatum to retract his comments and render an unqualified apology, warning that failure to do so would leave the association with no choice but to take “necessary steps” to protect the dignity of its members.

“GNAFF hereby serves notice to Dr. David Tenkorang Twum to, within 24 hours, retract his unfortunate remarks and render an unqualified apology to all farmers and fishermen across Ghana. Anything short of this will compel GNAFF to consider the appropriate steps necessary to defend the dignity and integrity of our hardworking members,” the association said.

GNAFF urged the public to show greater regard for farmers and fishermen, describing them as “the lifeline of national development whose sacrifices keep the country fed and alive.”
