Helicopter that landed in Nkawkaw not ours – VRA

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has distanced itself from a helicopter that made an emergency landing in Nkawkaw, Eastern Region, clarifying that the aircraft is not part of its operations.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, VRA’s Director of Corporate Affairs and External Relations, David Adomako Mensah, said recent media reports linking the Authority to the incident were “inaccurate and misleading.”

“We would like to state unequivocally that the said helicopter does not belong to VRA and neither does VRA operate aviation services. Our checks indicate that the helicopter in question belongs to the Volta River Aviation Limited (VRAL) which is registered with the Petroleum Commission,” the statement read.

Investigations by VRA revealed that the chopper, registered as 9G-AFW, is owned by Volta River Aviation Limited (VRAL), a private company licensed by the Petroleum Commission.

The aircraft was travelling from Accra to Kumasi on Monday, August 11, when poor visibility from bad weather forced the pilot to land in Nkawkaw as a safety precaution.

All passengers and crew were unharmed.

VRA stressed that its sole mandate is power generation and supply — not air transport — and urged the public and media outlets to verify information with its Corporate Affairs Department before publication.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency confirmed that the helicopter is not registered with the agency, raising concerns over whether it receives official weather updates.

The development comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over flight safety following a fatal military helicopter crash last week that killed eight people, including two government ministers.
