Taxes: Ghanaians sacrificed Flat Screen NPP for Black and white NDC- Awuku
Member of Parliament for Akuapim North Sammi Awuku has strongly criticised the John Mahama administration for visiting what he describes unprecedented hardship on Ghanaians. According to the former National Lottery Authority (NLA) boss the introduction of the energy sector levy of 1 cedi per litre of fuel and utility tariff hikes have made life unbearable to many Ghanaians.
Reacting to the implementation of the new fuel tax, officially known as the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025 or the “Dumsor Levy” Mr. Awuku said Ghanaians who were promised heaven by the NDC in opposition are now experiencing hell.
In a post on Facebook Mr. Awuku chronicled the number of policies introduced by the Mahama administration with negative impact on the populace.
“In May 2025, electricity tariffs went up by 14.75% and water by 4.02% under the Mahama led NDC government. Today, July 16, we’ve been slapped with another 2.45% hike in electricity. That’s a total of 17.2% in less than three months. For comparison, all of 2024 saw less than 11% increase and even had a 6.65.% reduction for lifeline users in the first quarter under the NPP.”
“As if that’s not enough, here comes the D-Levy. Call it the Death Levy, Demolition Levy, Dumsor Levy or just plain Disrespect — it fits. Remember when the 1% E-Levy was reversed on 2nd April? Turns out it was just a well-timed April Fool’s joke. Because now we’re dealing with 8% slapped on fuel. Yes, fuel. Not momo. Not luxury. Fuel. The very thing we all need to get around, from the taxi driver to the teacher to the tomato seller.” He added
Sammi Awuku warned Ghanaians to brace for more hardship before the years comes to an end as government intends tightening the noose further. According Ghanaians have sacrificed the NPP for an NDC administration that’s worse.
“Clearly, more painful hikes are waiting for us before the year ends. We really traded our flat screen TV for a black and white box. What a time”

A DAY OF RECKONING IS HERE
In May 2025, electricity tariffs went up by 14.75% and water by 4.02% under the Mahama led NDC government.
Today, July 16, we’ve been slapped with another 2.45% hike in electricity. That’s a total of 17.2% in less than three months. For comparison, all of 2024 saw less than 11% increase and even had a 6.65.% reduction for lifeline users in the first quarter under the NPP. Clearly, more painful hikes are waiting for us before the year ends.
As if that’s not enough, here comes the D-Levy.
Yes, fuel. Not momo. Not luxury. Fuel.
The very thing we all need to get around, from the taxi driver to the teacher to the tomato seller.
And unlike the E-Levy which spared you if your transaction was under 100 cedis, this one hits you even if you’re just buying 12 cedis worth of fuel. It’s like saying “thank you for suffering, here’s more.”
To top it all off, petrol went up by 2% and diesel by 5% from July 2, thanks to COMAC’s projections.
If government is serious about cutting down fuel allocations, maybe they should start by closing their private pump at the presidency. And also, let’s be clear — who exactly is a government appointee? Because the list keeps growing like a family WhatsApp group.
We really traded our flat screen TV for a black and white box. What a time.
Good morning, Ghanafo).
