The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has urged Ghanaians given opportunities to work, to commit to fulfilling obligations under their work contracts. This, according to him, will encourage other business owners in the country to venture into such initiatives to create more jobs. He was speaking at the launch of the drive green initiative by Afro Arab Group where drivers of electric vehicles operate on a work, pay, and own basis.
The DRIVE GREEN initiative is a landmark project aimed at accelerating the adoption of commercial electric vehicles across Ghana.
Under the program, 1,000 electric vehicles are expected to be rolled out nationwide through a work-and-pay scheme that allows drivers to operate the vehicles commercially while gradually paying toward ownership.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment George Opare Addo stressed that beneficiaries must strictly adhere to the terms of their contracts to safeguard the credibility of the program and encourage other private sector players to invest in similar ventures.
Founder of the Afro Arab Group, Ambassador Alhaji Salamu Amadu, the mastermind behind the work, pay, and own initiative, underscored that businesses can thrive if they make meaningful impacts in the lives of young people by creating more opportunities.
The initiative is projected to create more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs for young people and aligns with government’s broader 24-hour economy agenda.
In Phase One, 50 electric vehicles are ready for immediate distribution.
Interested applicants are required to present a valid Ghana Card, provide two guarantors, and make a payment of 20,000 cedis. The amount covers vehicle registration, comprehensive motor insurance, and a life insurance package for drivers, underwritten by Imperial Insurance.
