The Ministry of Transport is expected to meet with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport operators today, Tuesday, July 28, over the proposed increment in transport fares.
Transport unions have proposed a 30 percent upward adjustment in transport fares in response to rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of vehicle spare parts. They argue that the current cost of running their businesses has become unsustainable.
According to Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, who spoke on Citi FM, the unions would seek to engage the government on immediate solutions to the rising cost of petroleum products before presenting their proposal to the government.
The unions are expected to present their concerns and negotiate possible measures with the government to address the challenges affecting the sector.
The outcome of today’s meeting is expected to determine whether transport fares will be adjusted in the coming days or whether the government will introduce measures to cushion operators against rising fuel costs.
Already, the Chamber for Petroleum Consumers, COPEC, has urged the government to reintroduce the price interventions implemented during the peak of the Middle East crisis that reduced the impact of rising prices on businesses and consumers.
