ACCRA, Ghana — President John Dramani Mahama and the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called on party members to refrain from premature presidential campaign activities and instead concentrate on supporting the government’s governance agenda.
The appeal followed a meeting between President Mahama and the NDC Council of Elders on Friday, May 29, 2026, where discussions centered on party unity, internal discipline, and the successful implementation of the government’s “Resetting Agenda.”
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Council expressed concern over reports that some individuals and groups within the party had begun engaging in early campaign activities ahead of future presidential primaries. According to the Council, such actions could undermine party cohesion and divert attention from the government’s responsibility to deliver on its promises to Ghanaians.
President Mahama stressed that the party’s priority at this stage should be governance and national development rather than internal political competition.
“At this critical stage of national reconstruction and renewal, every member of the Party is expected to devote his or her energies, resources, and commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts to reset the country,” the statement noted.
The Council also cited Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which outlines the procedures and timelines for selecting a presidential candidate. It emphasized that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) has the authority to determine when the process for electing a flagbearer should commence.
As a result, the Council stated that no individual or group is authorized to engage in any form of presidential campaigning—directly or indirectly—until official timelines and guidelines are announced by the party.
Party members currently involved in campaign-related activities, including endorsements, mobilization efforts, and public advocacy for potential candidates, were directed to cease such actions immediately.
The Council reiterated its commitment to maintaining unity within the party and urged members to remain focused on supporting the government’s development agenda.
“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” the statement concluded.
The directive comes as the NDC government continues to pursue policies aimed at economic recovery, governance reforms, and national development under President Mahama’s administration.
