Government has transferred a total of GHS6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, following salary deductions from President John Dramani Mahama and his appointees.
The Controller and Accountant-General confirmed that the amount has officially been deducted and transferred to the Fund in line with directives issued by President Mahama.
At the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund last year, President Mahama pledged to donate six months of his salary to support the initiative aimed at improving access to healthcare and medical support for vulnerable persons.
The President subsequently encouraged all his appointees to contribute one month of their salaries to the Fund as part of efforts to mobilise resources for healthcare delivery.
In addition, President Mahama directed that appointees who failed to meet the initial deadline for asset declaration should forfeit three months of their salaries, with the proceeds also earmarked for the Mahama Cares Fund.
According to the Controller and Accountant-General, arrangements are currently underway to transfer the final tranche covering deductions from appointees affected by the asset declaration sanctions.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is expected to support critical healthcare interventions and provide assistance for persons battling chronic and life-threatening medical conditions across the country.
