Four former officials of the now defunct Power Distribution Services (PDS) have been picked up by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). The arrest of Philip Ayensu, Viraj Phat, Sophia Korkor, and Justice Menka-Premoh according to the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu is part of ongoing investigations into the alleged transfer of funds believed to belong to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
In a post on Facebook on Monday, May 4, 2026, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said the arrests were carried out under the government’s anti-corruption manifesto promise, Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).
According to him, the four suspects were picked up by the BNI last week as investigators probe the movement of what authorities believe are large sums of money linked to ECG and have since been granted bail as investigations continue.
“The Bureau of National Intelligence arrested the following persons affiliated to PDS last week as part of investigations into the transfer of large sums of money believed to belong to ECG,”
“The quartet has since been given bail pending further investigations,” he said.
The Akufo-Addo administration privatized ECG which was renamed PDS under the Millennium Challenge Compact of the United States. The deal however fell through with the then minister for Energy Peter Amewu described it as fraud. The scandal led to the loss of US$190 million in US funding and final legal dismissal of PDS claims by an international court in 2025.
The opposition NDC then made a probe into the failed deal a campaign promise. It has therefore not come to many as a surprise the current action.
