Accra, Ghana – The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has ordered GRIDCo CEO Ing. Mark Awuah Baah to step aside pending a full investigation into the fire that broke out at the Akosombo Power Control Centre on April 23, 2026. The incident disrupted transmission, knocking out an estimated 720–1,000 megawatts of electricity supply.
The fire forced emergency shutdowns and contributed to blackouts and intermittent power cuts across several regions. Engineers are working to restore normal operations, which may take up to five days.

The government has also announced a leadership shake-up at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region. Energy Minister John Jinapor will provide further updates during a press briefing scheduled for April 27.

GRIDCo, which manages the National Interconnected Transmission System, plays a central role in transmitting power from generators to distributors and large customers across Ghana.
