Madina police officer accused of assaulting ECG staff over power disconnection

A police officer identified as Sgt. Mathew, stationed at the Madina Police Station, has allegedly assaulted Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) staff after they filmed him during a disconnection exercise at his residence in Pantang in the Adentan Municipality.

The incident reportedly occurred after power was disconnected due to an outstanding electricity bill of GH¢13,191.69.

According to ECG officials, Sgt. Mathew has been disconnected more than six times in recent months over unpaid bills but allegedly reconnects the power immediately after the ECG task force leaves the premises.

ECG further disclosed that the meter account is registered in the name of Mrs. Mary Aboase, although the exact relationship between her and the officer remains unclear.

The company said the officer’s conduct has left its staff distraught and fearful for their safety while carrying out their lawful duties. ECG also accused him of seizing electricity cables belonging to the company.
