Champions League: Barcelona crash out despite win over Atletico Madrid

FC Barcelona bowed out of the UEFA Champions League in dramatic fashion after a 2-1 away victory against Atletico Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano proved insufficient to overturn a first-leg deficit.

Heading into the clash needing a comeback after a 2-0 loss at the Camp Nou, Barcelona started with urgency and intent. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal opened the scoring as early as the 4th minute, giving the visitors hope of a revival. That momentum was further boosted in the 24th minute when Ferran Torres doubled the lead on the night, leveling the tie on aggregate.

However, Atletico Madrid responded swiftly. Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman pulled one back in the 31st minute, restoring the hosts’ aggregate advantage and shifting the momentum back in favor of Diego Simeone’s side.

Barcelona continued to press for a decisive third goal, creating numerous chances, but were repeatedly frustrated by a disciplined Atletico defense marshaled by former Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet. The backline remained compact and resilient, denying space to Yamal and the rest of Barcelona’s attacking unit.

The visitors’ hopes suffered a major setback in the 79th minute when Eric Garcia was shown a red card by referee Clement Turpin after bringing down Alexander Sorloth as the last man.

Reduced to ten men, Barcelona were unable to mount a final push, and Atletico held on to secure progression.

Atletico Madrid will now face the winner of the tie between Arsenal and Sporting CP, with Arsenal currently holding a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Portugal.

For Barcelona, the result marks yet another painful exit from Europe’s elite competition, extending their UEFA Champions League drought to 11 years.
