The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted an outboard-powered wooden canoe carrying 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp on the River Volta.
The interception was carried out by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada during a routine patrol at about 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, around Tuanikopey Island.
According to the Police, the occupants of the canoe abandoned the vessel and fled after sighting the patrol team.
A search of the canoe revealed 29 sacks containing the suspected narcotic substances, with the slabs wrapped in yellow cellotape.
Police also found 14 25-litre gallons, 12 of which contained pre-mixed fuel, as well as two Yamaha outboard motors — one 40-horsepower and the other 30-horsepower.
The suspected narcotic substances have since been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters.
The Police say arrangements are underway to convey the outboard motors and pre-mixed fuel to the station for further investigation.
The Tema Regional Police Command is making efforts to identify and apprehend the persons who abandoned the canoe and its contents.
The Command has cautioned the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances.
It is also urging anyone with information about the vessel, its occupants or the suspected narcotics to report to the nearest Police station to assist with investigations.
