The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the death of a police officer who was allegedly attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.
According to a police statement issued on Thursday, September 17, the incident occurred on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, when the deceased and other officers were conducting highway patrol duties along the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road.
The Police said a motorbike rider approaching the patrol team suddenly diverted into the bush upon seeing the police vehicle.
The officers reportedly became suspicious and followed the rider from a different direction, where they found him unconscious on a bush road.
According to the service, the officers picked up the man and were transporting him to a hospital when he died on the way.
The Police said news of the rider’s death subsequently triggered an attack by a mob from the community on the officers.
During the attack, General Constable Redeemer Owusu was killed, while other officers sustained varying degrees of injuries. The police vehicle was also damaged.
The bodies of the deceased officer and the motorbike rider have since been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police has deployed a team of investigators and intelligence officers to assist with investigations and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna and Kalba, as well as the Regional Intelligence Team, have also been deployed to the area to strengthen security and maintain law and order.
The Police Service said all 36 suspects arrested in connection with the incident are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
They are expected to be put before the court after investigations.
