The Ghana Education Service has begun the process of paying 2023 Capitation Grant arrears to public basic schools, with District Education Directorates now holding the funds for onward disbursement.
A letter issued by the GES on Monday, September 14, 2026, instructed all Regional Directors to ensure the money gets to schools before the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year begins.
The Service said, “Funds transfer to the District Account includes the Sports and Culture component for District Offices. However, the Regional (Sports and Culture) components have been transferred to the various designated accounts of the Regional offices.”
GES said the arrangement was aimed at ensuring that heads of basic schools have the resources required to run their schools without disruption when the new academic year begins.
The Service has also scheduled monitoring of the process, with officials from headquarters expected to visit the regions.
The directive comes at a time when timely payment of Capitation Grants remains important to the running of public basic schools.
The scheme was introduced nationwide to replace school fees and provide funding for school-level activities, including areas such as facilities management, security, sports and cultural activities.
The government has previously announced the clearance of outstanding Capitation Grant arrears.
GES said in July 2025 that all outstanding arrears from 2023 to that point had been settled.
